A native new Zealand tree, wide spreading with a short branched trunk. Whiteywood has whitish grey peeling bark. The berries are a striking violet colour when ripe, eaten by a number of native birds, including Kereru, Tui and geckos. Small yellow flowers bloom in late spring and on into summer while the berries appear later on in summer and also in autumn. Whiteywood is a fast growing hardy tree that makes a great nurse crop for regenerating forest seedlings.
